1st Commute to Work

Today I was able to commute to work on the new bike. I loaded up my Timbuk2 bag with my work clothes and headed out. The commute is just about 6 miles and the ride is rolling hills. There are trails/bike lanes all the way to work. This morning was a bit cool, but tollerable. At work, the showers are new and there are plenty of lockers for use. The only issue I have with the facilities is that there is no sink/mirror, making it a bit awkward to shave.

The new bike was very comfortable. The wider tire base makes the bumps a bit easier to absorb. I really like the fact that the bike has the cyclo-cross brakes on the top bar. It makes it a lot easier to handle the bike when you have 20 lbs. of computer/clothes, etc. on your back.

New Bike

So... I have been contemplating getting a new bike for some time that would be more suitable for commuting to work and pulling G in the Burley around town. I did not want to hook the Burley up the Madone and risk hurting the carbon frame (read... excuse to get a new bike). I looked around quiet a bit at cyclo-cross bikes and found several that were of interest. At first I was looking at a Surly Cross-Check bike which is an all steel frame with relatively basic components. The ride was good, but it was more of all around commuter bike than a cross bike. I then looked at the F1X from Felt, the Lemond version, the Bianchi Axis, the Specialized version, the Trek version, and the Redline Conquest. I really liked the Felt F1X as it was built up with great components but it was out of my price range. I could find 2005 models on sale, but nothiing in my size. After more thought, many test rides I settled on the Redline Conquest. The bike was the perfect price, was completely outfitted with Shimano 105/Tiagra components and included pedals and solid wheels. I am very psyched and hope to be out riding it on Wednesday.
