The Rise of Bloggers...
This topic is an old one and many others have weighed in on it that have much more credibility than I. However I feel obliged to comment on the rise of the blogger in our society as it relates to journalism. Specifically the resignation of Dan Rather over the Bush War Records and Eason Jordan over his recent comments about journalist's deaths in Iraq.
First, for some background, bloggers have been given credit for shining the light on the "truth" which was different from what the aforementioned journalists/editors presented to their audience. The issue I take with it is that these bloggers are mainly conservatives not interested in the "truth" for "truths" sake but only if it furthers their cause. The fact that CBS or CNN could not stand-up to the criticism of some of their employees is beyond me. What they did may have been poor journalism, but none of the actions were malicious or criminal. To force their resignations over the incidents further discredits CBS/CNN in my eyes.
I also find it quiet interesting that conservatives are using the blog format to rally their troops so to speak to fight democratic intiatives and/or institutions. The conservative party treats their cause like a war in itself. They relish when a democrat (person or institution) falls or is slandered. Yet, they cry wolf everytime one of their own is caught in a lie or a 'poor' light. I could rant on about the "Weapons of Mass Destruction" but that would do me no good. Bush acted on bad advice and refuses to take full accountability for his actions.
What really sealed it for me about conservatives is a recent episode of the Apprentice. You have Bren, a republican assitant district attorney promoting the use of sex and homosexuality in an advertisement for a new body wash. I think Bren is very representative of the conservative party. They will use what they want to their advantage as long as it benefits them regardless of their morals or value. Bren was all for his Gay Porn idea until he realized he was not going to win with it. Then in the boardroom he was quick to point out that although it was his idea, it was against his better moral judgement. Hmmm... I think we should write to have Bren removed from his post as ADA for his immoral participation in a soft gay porn advertisement...
Anyway, I am off topic, but I believe that the conservatives have mastered the art of perception and have rallied their troops to the war. Let's hope Howard Dean can be as savvy and cut throat as Carl Rove, as it is all out war between conservatives and liberals.
